Companions
“I never trusted my ex-wife half as much as I trusted my dog.” – Farmer to his friend.
In Athuras, there are beasts that would otherwise rip a man’s throat out. There are things in nature that are pure animal instinct in both tooth and claw. However, there are things that can be tamed, used as a companion, or even assistant in certain. These creatures are what we are known as Companions and Familiars. Companions and Familiars are creatures how are bound to an owner, who have been trained to obey.
Companions and Familiars are not the same as normal Player Characters. Companions are treated and NPC’s, and as such do not gain experience. Companions are also not subject to normal resurrection methods. If a Companion or Familiar dies, the companion or familiar is permanently dead, save for the body (in which one might not want a Necromancer around!). These are not creatures of an advanced species. Additionally, Companion and Familiar creatures cannot bear their owner’s weight and cannot be used as Mounts. These are entirely separate from Mounts.
Domesticated Cat
Cost: 125 deras
Rarity: Common
Cats have been believed to be Deities, they have been believed to be devils. You will never own a cat, because it will own you. Cats cannot be trained, only convinced to assist you. Never assume that you own a cat; you are only there to provide it food and pet it (when it wants attention). However, should you earn the loyalty of a cat they can be extremely handy when you are in need. They are not meant to be a ferocious beast in battle but they are nice to have in a tight spot.
Domesticated Dog
Cost: 150 deras
Rarity: Common
Dogs are a man’s best friend to the very end. A rub on the belly and a full bowl of food is all that is really needed for them to consider you a companion. Should you find yourself with this loyal friend, you will surely have fun adventures. Not only is a dog good company, but they are ferocious and protective allies in battle.
Raven
Cost: 175 deras
Rarity: Common
When traveling in flocks, ravens are called a Murder. On their own, they can be counted upon to alert and are merciless companions. They trust very few but if you manage to earn that trust you can be certain this black feathered bird will have you in their sights at all times in order to watch over you. Be wary, however, as a raven does have a temper.
Snake
Cost: 200 deras
Rarity: Common
Snakes don’t care for friends nor do they care about enemies. They care about food and a safe place to sleep. While snakes do not tend to build an intimate bond with their companions, they do have the innate ability to determine who or what their food source is. A snake is difficult to train but with the right handler, they can become a deadly force.
Wolf
Cost: 340 deras
Rarity: Uncommon
While dogs and wolves are in the same family, wolves are much harder to tame. A wolf has the pack mentality and will always watch over its own. That being said, getting one to acknowledge that you are in its pack is a difficult feat. You must prove yourself to these savage hunters and earn their unending loyalty. Once you do, you can guarantee you have a companion until yours (or its) last breath. Much like a dog, they are wonderful company once you reach pack-status and will always be at your side.
Badger
Cost: 360 deras
Rarity: Uncommon
Badger, badger. . . Badgers are stubborn and rather nasty creatures. They dislike people and people tend to dislike them. However, the random oddball here and there does try to befriend a badger and when they do they find the ill-tempered creature is quite nurturing and loving. Badgers tend to watch-over their own in a way that can only be described as maternal. They will protect you and tend to your needs if you can take the time to get to know them.
Bat
Cost: 365 deras
Rarity: Uncommon
To tame a bat you must have not only extreme patience, but earplugs. Bats are not the most intelligent of creatures but they are intuitive and they are survival savvy. They are not fighters, but they are exceptional trackers. They are able to move undetectable for the most part and provide the best detectors when seeking something out. These are prime companions for assassins and thieves when scoping out a target.
Fox
Cost: 370 deras
Rarity: Uncommon
A fox is a sly creature that requires a lot of work to tame. They are deceitful and will bite the hand that feeds should it deem it the proper thing to do. Be careful while training this creature as it has the means and ability to kill you should it desire to do so. However, if you make it through the training and befriend these absurdly playful critters you will have a deadly weapon at your fingertips.
Hawk
Rarity: Uncommon
Hawks are the predators of the sky and have high standards for their companions. They do not enjoy being in cities and love traveling. In order to befriend and tame a hawk, you must impress it. If you manage to impress it, you will have its attention. Now that you have its attention, ear its trust. Once you have its trust, you have its heart. This means you have death on wings.
Cost: 375 deras
Eagle
Cost: 600 deras
Rarity: Rare
While hawks are predators in the sky, the eagle is the master of the sky. They are the kings of flight. These birds are massive in size and yet seem to know how to navigate the air currents for silent flight. Eagles are proud creatures and have no fear. In the face of death they will simply rip into opposing forces with deadly talons. Taming an eagle takes a certain level of patience, dedication and skill as only those with the strongest of wills and hearts are accepted by the birds.
Spider
Cost: 600 deras
Rarity: Rare
One does not take a spider. It trains a spider. Spiders have no ability to feel, nor do they have a driving passion. They require a high level of patience and extreme knowledge of arachnids to know and understand what they are capable of. Spiders do not know voice commands and can only respond to gesture or vibrations. Once learned, spiders become quite capable of immense possibilities.
Enchanted Skull
Cost: 200,000
Rarity: Legendary (evil aligned)
The chances you are going to ever see an enchanted skull is rare; the chances that you will ever own one is even more rare. No good aligned person can travel with the skull lest they be driven mad. Enchanted Skulls were created centuries ago by dark mages in order to petrify and control the population. They are magically bound to their companion and radiate dark energies. Each one is embedded with at least one gemstone, a symbol of its power.
Gryphon
Cost: 100,000 deras
Rarity: Legendary
The Gryphon is a wondrous beast. It is extremely intelligent to the point of being able to fully comprehend any one language. They are easy to train but difficult to tame. A gryphon must be raised from the time it is a hatchling in order to become a true companion. This means they require an immense amount of dedication. No evil-aligned person can keep a gryphon. They are pure of heart and cannot tolerate things of darkness. If you can raise and train your gryphon, you will have the best friend you could imagine and a valiant comrade in the heat of battle.
